Greetings

Hello, Suzuna! I'm a moderator on the wikis (all languages), but it's a difficult task since I speak only English.

I have a few questions for you! So far, no one who speaks German has been able to offer a good translation for "Universal Likes", "Universal Loves", "Universal Neutrals", etc. These would be used on each villager's page, in the tables where it says "All Universal Likes (except Fruit and Vegetables)" for example.

Google translate is no help at all to me.

Secondly, what do you think should be the name of the Quests page? Is "quest" a word Germans understand? There have been at least 3 different translations of "quest" on the wiki -- Suche, Quest, and Aufgabe. The game also uses Auftrag. Which of these do you think is best?

Thank you, and welcome to the wiki! margotbean (Diskussion) 00:11, 10. Okt. 2017 (BST)

More questions and answers

Hello again! Thank you for answering my questions!

Your changes to Marnie's page are perfectly fine, very good in fact! The other wikis will have to catch up to your improvements.

Schedules are probably the most messy part of the entire wiki (in all languages), so any improvements you make will be very much appreciated.

You asked if I'm in charge of formatting or other areas of the wiki. Well, no, I'm a moderator, but I'm no more important than any other user, I just have more experience editing the wiki than most people. I taught myself mediawiki syntax and improved a lot of templates, and spent so much time editing the wiki that the Admin (Katzeus) asked me to be a moderator. I try to keep the wikis in synch with each other, and delete vandalism, and add information when I discover it, but only Katzeus is "in charge."

Having said that, I sometimes undo changes that would make one wiki significantly different than the others (mostly this happens on the English wiki -- people do some crazy things sometimes). Don't worry too much about making mistakes, just have fun! And, I'm always here to help!

One more question for you: How would you translate "All Universal Dislikes" and "All Universal Hates"?  :D

Thank you again! --margotbean (Diskussion) 00:13, 11. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Schedules

I think you've got the hang of it! I can't say which word is better "Tagesablauf" or "Zeitplan", but I can say that all villagers' pages should use the same word.

Something to keep in mind: You may find that other translators who came before you did not translate any links, templates, or headings because they did not understand Mediawiki syntax. So, you will find inconsistencies all over the place. For example, on one page, all the tables are translated into German, but the headings are still in English. On another page, only the headings are translated, and the rest of the tables are still in English.

Don't be afraid to make your changes! You're doing great!  :) margotbean (Diskussion) 19:20, 11. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Letters in the Mail Translations

I have to say no, I'm sorry! -- the wiki text needs to match the in-game text.

The quotes at the top of character pages are a different matter, since many of them are not found in the game. If the source of the quote is something like "Dev Update" or "Steam Trophy", you can translate those, since they don't appear in the game. If the source of the quote is the character, then it should match the game exactly.

Any text that appears in the game can be found in underlying data files. If you are interested in looking at those, I can explain how to extract them. It's pretty simple, if you have the desire to do so. (If you don't want to, then it might seem quite confusing). Let me know.

Thank you for working on the friendship page!! It is huge, and a lot of work!

I saw your question to Katzeus on the English wiki. I hope his answer helps. The information you wanted is also here: Vorlage:Name. --margotbean (Diskussion) 19:23, 12. Okt. 2017 (BST)

p.s. It works the same way if you see Dwarf. See Vorlage:NPC. Greetings! margotbean (Diskussion) 19:42, 12. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Update: I have translated all the characters' citations that are in data files. Any citation at the top of a character's page that is not yet translated, please feel free to translate it.  :) margotbean (Diskussion) 01:12, 13. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Freundschaft

Oh, wow, you're translating from the Switch version, that's so much work! I need to thank you again! And your poor brother, because you're stealing his Switch and translating instead of letting him play the game. (ha ha)

I put one of the data files here: Object Data. If you want to, you can see the English names as well as German names and descriptions in it. Use it only if you want to!

The format is:

 • Item number
 • English name
 • Sell Price
 • Edibility
 • Category
 • German Name
 • German Description

All these are separated by slashes /. You can ignore everything other than names and descriptions. Again, if it looks like a lot of gibberish, then please just ignore it, and keep on doing what you have been doing!

I will work on the Freundschaft page today, it is so big and intimidating, I'm happy to help in any small way. I'll start with the items you asked about.

I have another small request -- I was the person who translated "Universal Mag Nicht" and "Universal Hasst", and I'm sure they're the wrong terms... I mean the actual category headings ==Universal Mag Nicht== and ==Universal Hasst==. Please fix those if they sound like an English-speaking person translated them, will you?  :) Whenever you have time, there's no hurry. Just don't be afraid to fix my fake bad incorrect google-translated German.

If you want to take a break from the Freundschaft page and translate something else, then you should do it. Remember, just have fun. Don't worry too much about making mistakes. Anything you contribute is a good thing.

Thank you again for all your hard work! margotbean (Diskussion) 18:40, 14. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Lost Books & Letters

Lost Books are here: Benutzerin:Margotbean/Lost Books
Letters are here: Benutzerin:Margotbean/Mail

Hope they help! By the way, I've noticed errors on the English wiki in letter text, so they have been copied to the German wiki with the errors... Have fun trying to sort it all out. o.O

Any edit you make is fine. Make a small edit when you feel the urge. Make large edits when you feel like it. It's all good!

Be sure to ask me if you have any other questions! margotbean (Diskussion) 23:12, 14. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Hi Suzuna -- it's perfectly fine if you delete from a page. After all your hard work, you can decide the page is translated!  :)

I hope you stick around and keep translating. You can create pages, yes! Whatever you like. If you ever run into problems, don't hesitate to ask me!

p.s. "I think I finished the friendship page" is something I never thought I would read. AWESOME JOB!!!!! Thank you!!!! margotbean (Diskussion) 20:44, 15. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Deleting Pages

I can delete pages. If you wait for Katzeus to do it... heh heh, you might be waiting a long time.  ;)

If you add delete to the top of a page, that will mark it for deletion, and add it to the "Pending deletion" category. Then I can go through and delete them all at once quickly.

If you want to add a reason for marking the page for deletion, the syntax is: reason for deletion goes here.

It's true, there used to be individual pages for all the tools on the English wiki, then someone realized they all said the same thing, so condensed them into one page. But, the individual pages were already copied into a few other languages. So, all in all, it makes for a big hot mess. lol I'm glad you're still editing the wiki, and cleaning up!! Thank you!! margotbean (Diskussion) 23:33, 19. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Bundles etc.

It looks like the name of the bundle is actually "Verzauberer", so no need to change it. I checked the data files, then loaded a game in German (on PC) and it said "Verzauberer" in the game. If it says something else on Switch, then that's a bug we need to report.

Redirecting happens automatically when you move a page, the old page name becomes an automatic redirect to the new page. You can create a redirect manually, if you want. Type the name of the page in the URL, then the wiki takes you to a page that says "this page does not exist". Then you edit that page and add #REDIRECT New page name goes here.

If you want to get fancy, you can redirect to a section of a page, like so: #REDIRECT Page Name#Section Name.

But, I think you want to know how to change the tools pages to redirect to the new single page, right? If so, then just delete everything on the page, and replace it with #REDIRECT New Page Name. It can help to click the link in the sidebar on the left (in desktop view) that says "What links here" (in English, anyway). If a lot of pages link to the page you are changing, then make it a redirect. If only a few pages link to it, you can mark it for deletion, then edit the pages that link to it and change the links yourself one by one.

I'm not sure what to do about the Quests page... One user prefers "Aufgabe", another prefers "Quest"... At this point there are so many links to variations of the word(s), that I simply created redirects rather than editing 100 pages. Basically, I dunno what to do.  ??? What do you think?

Buffs

I've created the page here: Benutzerin:Margotbean/Buffs

There's not much in the data files (really it's just the names of the buffs), so you are free to translate the rest as you see fit. One problem I noticed is that on the English wiki we use "magnetism" when in fact the game always says "magnetic radius".... Oops! So, now I have to decide if I should move the English page from "Magnetism" to "Magnetic Radius", or leave things as they have been for a year, and create a redirect page from "Magnetic Radius" to "Magnetism."

You are free to call it "Magnetischer Radius" or whatever the German translation of "Magnetism" would be... that seems only fair.  :D

It's the same issue with Quests! How funny! Let's make the changes you suggested, before a year goes by and the wrong terms are still there!

Question: If there are both story quests and help wanted quests listed on a page, what would the heading be? Aufträge or Hilfeanfragen? For example, Gus and Robin both send story quests in the mail, but they also request things on the bulletin board outside Pierre's shop. On the English wiki, both are listed at the bottom of their pages, under the heading "Quests". How do we handle this in German? margotbean (Diskussion) 18:54, 21. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Update: I just re-read your comments, and you said you got a new quest with the button "Auftrag annehmen", but was this a quest in the mail (story quest) or from the bulletin board (help wanted quest)? Because the bulletin board button says "Auftrag annehmen" -- this much I know from in-game testing. I haven't tested a quest sent in the mail in German... I've been a bit busy!  :P margotbean (Diskussion) 21:20, 21. Okt. 2017 (BST)

Story Quests

I am sorry! I read "the same for story quests" but my brain said "the same as you did for Lost Books". Duh! Here is the page: Benutzerin:Margotbean/StoryQuests]

I am totally and completely fine with you making the changes to the quests page, and any related changes! If the spam filter won't let you move the quests page to "Aufträge" then I can do that, but otherwise, please go for it!

About schedules... well... yes, the game files contain the villagers' schedules, but the code that interprets them is complicated. I've looked at it, and thought "Um... no. No, no no. This is way too much work!"

The schedule data is on each villagers' Discussion page (on the English wiki). Some of them have very simple schedules, but some of them would make you cry trying to untangle it. I have the same desire to dive into it as you have to start a new game to check it.  ;)

Example: Sam's schedule   (You have to click to "expand" the code)

You can see the first entry -- the 9th (of what season???) his schedule depends on whether or not you have 6 hearts of friendship with Penny. Then again on the 23rd (of what season?) there is a GOTO statement... So, his schedule is the same on the 23rd as the 9th, I guess. But what season? And what if you have more than 6 friendship hearts with Penny?

The next entry says "rain". What if you have 7 hearts of friendship with Penny on the 9th of Fall? Where will Sam be? I don't know, and I would surely break down in tears trying to figure it out!  :)

So, that's why the schedules on the villagers' pages have been created by players following villagers around and writing down where they were. It's also why they're wrong or incomplete.

If you ask my advice, I would say to change anything you notice is wrong, and leave the rest as it is. You are free to edit anything you like, of course. Just don't make yourself crazy, ok?  :D

Let me know if you can't move the quests page. Regards! margotbean (Diskussion) 13:25, 27. Okt. 2017 (BST)

I've moved the quests page to Aufträge now. There should be a link at the top right of the page that says "More", with a dropdown arrow. If you click the dropdown arrow, it should say "Move page"... but I don't know if normal users can see it right now or not. With recent vandalism, the admin may have disabled it.

The numbers in the schedule files refer to tiles on the maps. When Sam moves from one area of his house to another, it says he moves from tile 17 13 0 to tile 22 13 1. To figure out which exact spot Sam is in, you'd have to open the map in a map editor like tIDE or Tiled, and find the exact squares listed in the data file. I told you it was complicated!

There is a problem with pages updating. They used to update after a short time (20 minutes at most), but now it seems they update only if you hit "Edit" then immediately save without making any changes. I don't know why.

The Fishing/Tool page exists so it can be used on multiple other pages, through transclusion. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Transclusion

I guess it's only transcluded on 2 pages on the English wiki, but it still avoids duplication. If a change has to be made, then it can be made on the Fishing/Tool page, and all pages that transclude it will be up to date. Theoretically.

The alternative is that the same table exists on 2 pages, and someone someday makes a change to one table, but doesn't even realize the other table exists. So the wiki contradicts itself. Then some poor moderator has to go through and make the changes on all the other pages that need it. (Story of my life) ha ha margotbean (Diskussion) 20:28, 27. Okt. 2017 (BST)
